Sera or intestinal contents of infected or control animals were used in agglutination assays in 96-well plates. Approximately 5×105 trophozoites were incubated at 4 °C for 1 h with heat-inactivated intestinal secretions and sera in TYI-S-33 medium without bovine serum. The well content was mixed to assess agglutination of trophozoites by microscopy and to reveal antibodies using different anti-dog or anti-cat immunoglobulins.
