Measurement of a function of cell membrane integrity. The LDH assay indicated that the exposure of up to 40 μmol·L⁻¹ of porphyrin adducts (dissolved in DMSO) to the cultured oral epithelial cells for up to 7 h had no toxic effect when compared with the control cells. However, the exposure of 80 μmol·L⁻¹ adducts of DMSO (0.4%) at 7 h resulted in a significant change when compared with the control cells. 1 Unit (U) is the amount of LDH that catalyses the reaction of 1 μmol of substrate per minute (*P<0.05). DMSO, dimethyl sulphoxide; LDH, lactate dehydrogenase.
