Epidermis with the outermost layer (SC) fun­ctioning as the primary skin barrier. The biosynthesis of the SC ceramides is located in the lower and middle epidermal layers, while storage takes place at the lamellar bodies together with processing enzymes like GBA. Once extruded at the interface of the viable epidermis and the SC, GBA converts the GlcCers into their final barrier components, the ceramides, which become part of the ordered SC lipid matrix.
