Post-pyelonephritic scars demonstrate ongoing active inflammation. Gomori trichrome staining of UPEC-infected mice (n=11) with grossly evident scars but negative organ bacterial titers 28 days after completion of CRO treatment demonstrated collagen deposition as well as replacement and retraction of cortical tissue (A,B; scale bars: 200 µm). This was accompanied by dramatic capsular thickening over the scar and a cellular infiltrate (C, inset from B; scale bar: 50 µm) that morphologically consisted primarily of lymphocytes (D; scale bar: 20 µm).
