Summary of endometrial changes during menstruation in humans (top) and during simulated menstruation in an ovariectomised mouse model (bottom). Cellular and histological events occurring in the mouse endometrium during simulated menstruation recapitulate events that occur in the human endometrium at menstruation: apoptosis preceding extensive neutrophil influx and inflammatory cytokine expression.
