mRNA translation stress on EBNA1 polysomes activates PI3Kδ and E2F1 synthesis. Translation attenuation in cis caused by the GAr sequence of the EBNA1 mRNA causes translation stress, which results in activation of PI3Kδ and the induction of E2F1 mRNA translation independent of AKT and mTOR pathways. The newly synthesised E2F1 induces downstream target genes, including cyclins and c-myc, resulting in an increase in cell growth and proliferation
