Overview of SIS ECM scaffold decellularization and processing. Porcine jejunum is split horizontally and superficial layers of the tunica mucosa, tunica serosa, and tunica muscularis are removed mechanically, leaving the tunica submucosa and basilar portions of the tunica mucosa. Biologic scaffolds composed of ECM have been fabricated primarily as multilaminate sheets, which are used clinically as surgical mesh materials or patch grafts. However, ECM bioscaffolds also can be processed into tubular grafts, comminuted forms (powders), and hydrogels.
