The procedure for assessing spatiotemporal [Ca2+]c dynamics in beta cells. (A,B): We used computational simulation (A, red) and functional multicellular calcium imaging (B, green) to determine beta cell spatial coordinates within networks of beta cells and the individual [Ca2+]c activity either in experiments or in simulations (C,D). Oscillations were binarized (D) and further processed to extract individual spatio-temporal clusters of [Ca2+]c activity (E,F).
