Diagram of key brain structures in dual-systems models (Bechara, 2005)
CAPTION: A diagram of key brain structures comprising the impulsive system (red)
and reflective/executive system (purple). Note that in this figure, the insula
is identified with the executive/reflective system. However, in the competing
neurobehavioral decision systems theory, the insula is identified with the
impulsive system and in the triadic theory, the insula is considered a distinct
component, the third system of the decisional triad. AC=anterior
cingulate cortex; DA=dopamine; 5-HT=serotonin;
Hip=hippocampus; A=amygdala; VMPC=ventromedial
prefrontal cortex; DLPC = dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
