Oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. The acetyl group in acetyl-CoA is oxidized through the citric acid cycle, generating electron-rich reducing equivalents NADH and FADH2. The electrons are transferred to oxygen in the electron transport chain, coupled with the pump of protons to the intermembrane space.
