Oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. The acetyl group in acetyl-CoA is oxidized through the citric acid cycle, generating electron-rich reducing equivalents NADH and FADH2. The electrons are transferred to oxygen in the electron transport chain, coupled with the pump of protons to the intermembrane space. The proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane is used to drive ATP synthesis via ATP synthase.
