Model for Cellular Differentiation. We speculate that cellular differentiation may be driven by a two-step process. First, sequence-specific factors (bookmarks) are expressed as a consequence of environmental and positional cues. Second, the positive feedback set up by read/write machineries drives the establishment and maintenance of tissue-specific epigenetic patterns. As a consequence, genomic bookmarks are key targets to understand cellular differentiation and reprogramming.
