High levels of p-SMAD 1/5/9 were detected in the medial layer and adjacent cells of arterioles in patients with uremic calciphylaxis. A von Kossa (vK)-positive arteriole in a patient with calciphylaxis is shown at low (a) and high (b) magnification. Strong nuclear expression of p-SMAD 1/5/9 was detected in cells in the corresponding vessel (c, d). Weak or absent p-SMAD 1/5/9 expression was present in arterioles of control skin samples (e, f).
