Effect of channel blockers and a Ca²⁺ chelator on the cold-shock-induced [Ca²⁺]_cyt increase. Thirty minutes before cold shock, 5 mM EGTA (A), 1 mM La³⁺ (C), or 1 mM Gd³⁺ (D) was added to the medium. Then, the relative luminescence of a plant harboring aequorin was measured, as in Fig. 1, before and after the application of precooled solution (3 °C). The peak luminescence after the addition of the solution at 3 °C with or without 5 mM EGTA (B, n ≥ 17), 1 mM La³⁺ (D, n ≥ 9), or 1 mM Gd³⁺ (F, n ≥ 9) is shown.
