Effects of different C. burnetii strains on expression of different surface markers by bovine and human MDM. Cells were inoculated with C. burnetii strains (100 MOI for 1 h) or stimulated with E. coli LPS (6 μg/ml), harvested 24 h later and immunolabelled for surface markers CD40, CD80, CD86, MHCI, and MHCII. Results of 3–8 independent experiments per C. burnetii strain are shown as box and whisker plots (*p ≤ 0.05; **p ≤ 0.01). Strains are indicated by numbers as listed in Table 1.
