Level 1 predictors were the six basic emotion categories within which FACS expression scores were calculated. Categories were dummy-coded such that the target emotion category (the emotion category that matched the emotional episode as identified by observers; i.e., joy category for joy episode model) served as the reference group in all models. Each model contained five dummy-coded predictors corresponding to the non-target emotion categories (γ01, γ02, γ03, γ04, and γ05, respectively).

Results presented here may reflect misindentified model, as more parameters were estimated than Level 2 units. A model with a single dichotomous fear expression predictor mirrored these results (B= 0.38, p = .199). Significant coefficients (p < .05) noted in bold.
