Most of the time frequency combs are generated by ultrashort pulse mode-locked lasers. The time-domain regular train of periodic optical waveforms (upper line) gives rise to a broad frequency-domain spectrum made of discrete comb lines (lower line) precisely separated by the pulse repetition frequency. (b) Frequency comb generators can serve as broadband light sources to interrogate the absorption of an atomic or molecular sample.
