Guidance of professional phagocytes to apoptotic cells. Professional phagocytes migrate to the site of apoptotic cells in response to a variety chemotactic signals (“find me” signals, A). Subsequently, recognition of the target cell is mediated by the activation signals that promote adhesion and phagocytosis of apoptotic corpses (“eat me signals”) as well as the inactivation of inhibitory “don't eat me” signals (B).
