(c) Normalized extinction (absorption + scattering) spectrum of the nanoparticles and the free dye. The nanoparticle spectral curve does not go to the baseline due to significantly higher scattering, compared to the free dye. (d) The 9L glioma cell and MCF7 cell targeting efficiency of the F3-attached nanoparticles. The dye stains the cells, irrespective of the cell line, due to its high affinity towards the proteins. However the F3-targeted nanoparticles stain the 9L cells significantly more than the MCF7 cells. Note that the non-targeted nanoparticles stain the targeted cells (9L) significantly less, while for the non-targeted cells (MCF7) both targeted and non-targeted particle staining is equally poor, as expected
