Hyphal elongation rate is increased in the akl1^−/− mutant. (A) Wild-type (KC 274) vs. akl1^−/− (KC554), germ tube induction. An overnight culture was diluted in YPD at 37°C, with or without 10% serum, as indicated. Samples were fixed at the indicated times and the proportion of germ tubes was determined by microscopic observation. Six hundred cells were counted in each culture. (B) Length of germ tubes was measured in the same cultures as for (A). Hundred cells were measured for each condition. The error bars indicate the standard deviations. All differences were highly significant by Student's two-tailed t-test (^*p < 10⁻¹⁵).
