Cytospins prepared from fresh bronchoalveolar lavage samples underwent immunohistochemical (IHC) and immunofluorescent (IF) staining to assess xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) protein expression; representative photographs are shown. Cells from controls (A) and subjects with alcohol use disorders (AUDs; B) expressed cytoplasmic XOR protein by IHC; XOR staining was more intense in AUD subjects’ cells.
