Within the pseudo-infundibula, a compact keratin layer adheres closely to the fibres. In the middle and deep reticular dermis, the fibres are surrounded by a small amount of focally granulomatous chronic infiltrate. In the deepest dermis and hypodermis, the fibres are surrounded by fibroplasia, and no inflammatory infiltrate is noted.
