Different lipid bilayer structures (inset) could produce very similar scattering intensities, especially at q < 0.3 Å−1 (main image). The scattering intensity shown in black is based on a published DMPC lipid bilayer structure in the fluid phase (Toppozini et al., 2012). We fitted these data using WillItFit to arrive at a different bilayer density profile, and the corresponding scattering intensity is shown in red. All parameters used for the calculations are listed in Table S4 in the supporting information. Also shown in grey symbols as a reference is a subset of the MSP1E3D1:DMPC nanodisc 303 K data from Fig. 2.
