Phenol soluble modulins (PSMs) negatively affects exponential phase persister levels. (A) S. aureus strain Newman persister frequencies obtained when supplemented with 25% stationary phase endogenous supernatants from either strain Newman (WT), NewmanΔagr (Δagr) or NewmanΔRNAIII (ΔRNAIII). (B) Persister frequencies obtained when supplemented with 25% stationary phase supernatants from either strain LAC or LACΔpsmαβhld. Persister cells were selected using 20x MIC of ciprofloxacin and all supernatant treatments were compared to the un-supplemented control (TSB). The data represent the mean persister frequencies ± SD calculated from three biological replicates (^∗P < 0.05, ^∗∗P < 0.01, ^∗∗∗P < 0.001).
