The Bam complex catalyzes the efficient assembly of OmpA into proteoliposomes that vary in lipid composition. A, urea-denatured OmpA was incubated with SurA and proteoliposomes that contained the Bam complex and the indicated lipids for 40 min at 30 °C. The folding of the protein was monitored by Western blotting using an anti-OmpA antiserum. Representative results are shown. B, quantitation of the efficiency of OmpA folding into proteoliposomes that contained different lipids. Folding assays that used each type of proteoliposome were repeated 3–6 times.
