Figure 1

Overview of the different functional human NKT cell subsets. CD1d-restricted human NKT cells can be divided into subsets based on their TCR repertoire and cytokine profile. Type I NKT cells express the invariant Vα24Jα18 TCR α-chain and can be subdivided into five distinct functional subsets (indicated in green). In addition, type II NKT cells express a diverse TCR repertoire and can be subdivided into two functional subsets (indicated in blue). Upon activation, NKT cells secrete a unique pattern of cytokines, indicated for each subtype. Type I and type II NKT cells are able to switch between different functional subsets upon interactions within the TME. Abbreviations: NKT, natural killer T; TCR, T cell receptor; TH, helper T; Treg, regulatory T; TFH, follicular helper T; TME, tumor microenvironment.
