Mortality data for ages 30–69 were standardized to a uniform age distribution by averaging the age-specific death rates for the eight 5–year age groups within the 40-year age range. The death rate (R per 1000) in each 40-year age range is the mean of the rates in the eight 5–year age ranges. The 40–year risk of death is then 1-exp(-40R/1000).
