Average swarm area for wt is consistent, unless using M63 medium with glucose or FAB-glutamate, for which all strains show decreased motility. The wt swim area varies more than wt swarming, but not as much as the ΔdipA mutant. The ΔdipA mutant swarms only on M8 medium with glucose and LB Lennox broth. All assays were performed in triplicates. Error bars indicate standard deviations. Maximum swarm area is 7,853 mm2, and maximum swim area is 2,827 mm2 (based on plate size).
