Concentration profiles for gas mixing. Four cases are shown: DIFF, CARD, VENT, and BOTH. Cardiogenic flows produce a significant increase in gas mixing over the diffusion only case. However, the addition of cardiogenic flows provides only a minor enhancement to mixing under mechanical ventilation.
