In this experimental set-up green, red, and blue variables can be measured/controlled online, offline, or via a soft sensor/kinetic model, respectively (left). The target variable biomass can be measured indirectly via turbidity (linear correlation) or Raman spectroscopy (PLS). The substrate consumption, e.g., glucose, can be calculated due to the relationship between cell and substrate concentration in a macroscopic model based on Monod equations (right).
