Experimental design. An audiovisual or auditory stimulus was presented on the screen for 1 s followed by a fixation cross-period of 1500 ms in which participants pressed a button to indicate whether they heard ‘aba’ or ‘ada’. When they were not sure, they pressed with their index finger and when they were sure, they pressed with their middle finger. The next trial appeared after a jitter of 500–1000 ms.
