Fig. 4 — The scheme of targets for therapeutic intervention after perinatal asphyxia. The first and most effective is head cooling applied immediately after the injury, aimed at avoiding/limiting injures resulting from temporal hypoxia-ischemia. Current strategies are based on preventing the development of leukodystrophic disorders (anti-oxidative, neuroprotective are myelin-preserving protocols) and favoring endogenous neuroreparative mechanisms (providing anti-inflammatory therapeutics and trophic support)
