Figure 5. A295S Actin Impairs Drosophila Flight Kinematics.

Figure 5

(A) Representative flight trajectories, and instantaneous acceleration values at every sampled point, for w1118, heterozygous Act88FWT/+, and heterozygous Act88FA295/+. Act88FA295S/+ mutants are characterized by low acceleration values over the length of their flight paths.

(B) Probability distribution plots of velocity, angular velocity, acceleration, and centripetal acceleration for w1118 (gray, n = 80), Act88FWT/+ (black, n = 90), and Act88FA295S/+ (red, n = 30) flies. While no difference in mean velocity or angular velocity was detected between Act88FWT/+ and Act88FA295S/+, both were significantly lower for each line relative to w1118. Moreover, no difference in acceleration during ascending flight was observed for w1118 versus Act88FWT/+, while acceleration for the mutant line was significantly lower than that for both. Similarly, centripetal acceleration for Act88FA295S/+ was significantly lower than that for w1118 and Act88FWT/+.
