The presence of inflammatory cells around the airways was observed as early as 48 hours after infection with each virus as was damage to the bronchial epithelia (insets) compared to naïve controls (A). Peribronchovascular inflammation scores were significantly higher in mice infected with PR8 (B). Ciliated epithelia shed into the airways were visualized on cytospin (inset) and enumerated in 5 randomly selected fields per mouse and there were more shed epithelia in the PR8 infected mice (C). Data are represented as the mean and standard deviation with n=5 animals at 48 hpi and are representative of two independent experiments. Asterisks (*) represent p<0.05 by nonparametric one-way ANOVA and Dunn's multiple comparisons test. Scale bar = 100 μm
