Effects of light environment on skin color of all 24 species of crocodylians. Animals maintained in black tanks were measured, placed in a white tank and measured again after three hrs. (A) Members of the Family Crocodylidae show relative strong color change, except for the African slender-snouted and African dwarf crocodiles. (B) Members of the Family Alligatoridae do not exhibit color change while members of the Family Gavialidae (C) change in the opposite manner to the crocodylids. The data represent the means ± standard deviations for the number of animals indicated on each graph. *Statistically different from measurements of skin color of the same animals in dark tanks.
