When cell lose attachment, elevated BNIP3 allows dissociation of BECN1/BCL-2 complexes and allows for initiation of autophagy and inhibition of apoptosis to promote cell growth in tumorspheres. Autophagy modulators rapamycin and chloroquine can alter this response and cell survival in attachment free conditions.
