S100A8 is increased in the brains of patients with sepsis. S100A8/A9 protein is increased in the parietal cortex of patients who die of sepsis compared to patients who die of non-infectious causes (t-test, p=0.005) (A). S100A8 immunoreactivity is markedly increased in a representative patient who died of sepsis (C) compared to a patient who died of respiratory failure consequent to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (B). S100A8 immunoreactivity appears in cells of multiple morphologies, including perivascular mononuclear cells (arrow), cells with stellate morphology (arrowhead) and along the vasculature (double arrowhead). ** p = 0.005
