Active α5β1 and inactive α5β1 are trafficked through different endocytic routes in cells migrating through complex 3D matrices. Inactive α5β1 is internalized in early endosomes (EEs), transported to Rab coupling protein (RCP) and Rab11‐positive recycling endosomes (REs) and recycled to the plasma membrane at the tip of invasive protrusions at the front of the cell. Fibronectin (FN)‐bound α5β1 is preferentially endocytosed from subnuclear fibrillar adhesions and delivered to late endosomes (LEs)/lysosomes.
