The experimental scheme: an optical pump pulse is spatially modulated and used to photoexcite a thin silicon wafer, which, in turn, transfers the spatial encoding mask onto a coincident THz pulse. The subsequent THz pulse is then passed through a biological sample onto a time-gated, single-element detector. By varying the arrival time of the electro-optic sampling pulse, we measure the full temporal trace of our THz waveform.
