C. violaceum competitiveness correlates with the frequency of wild type relative to quorum sensing-deficient mutants. C. violaceum wild type or a quorum sensing-deficient mutant (CviIR) cells were mixed together at a 1:9 or 9:1 ratio and then combined with wild-type B. thailandensis and grown for 24 h. The final B. thailandensis density was determined by selective plating and colony counts. The solid lines represent the means for each group. The vertical bars represent the standard deviation of each group. Statistical analysis by paired t-test compared with wild type: *, p = 0.0468. Paired groups are indicated by color and represent experiments performed in parallel on different days.
