Table 2.

The impact of reproductive health on indications for renal biopsy in women with glomerular disease

Time of biopsy Biopsy factors specific to reproductive health
Pre-pregnancy
  • Ensures disease quiescence in relapsing-remitting glomerular disease to optimize future pregnancy outcome.

Pregnancy
  • To facilitate diagnosis of glomerular disease in pregnancy, where histological diagnosis will alter management.

  • Increased risk of bleeding in meta-analysis (second trimester).

Postpartum
  • Increased prevalence of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis may be due to pregnancy unmasking of asymptomatic disease or causing hyperfiltration injury.
