Overview of the sampling site of Chlainomonas sp. at Ľadové Lake (the High Tatras, Slovakia). Fig. 2. Red colouration was visible at nearly all ice-covered parts of the lake (mid-June 2016). The harvest spot was close to the southern shore (sample LP03, red arrowhead). Fig. 3. Detailed view of red snow after harvest, Chlainomonas sp. was present at the surface and down to a depth of 2 cm. Fig. 4. Approximately 10 cm below the surface a prominent soft slush layer was noticed, which was apparently soaked by lake water. Fig. 5.
