Fig. 1. Schematic representations of the outcomes of biomimetic mineralisation for two proteins, namely haemoglobin (Hb) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). Hb does not undergo biomimetic mineralisation under standard conditions but can be chemically modified by acetylation or succinylation (shown) to increase the surface negative charge and facilitate ZIF-8 formation and encapsulation. BSA can be biomimetically mineralised but amination introduces surface amine groups that are protonated under the conditions used for ZIF-8 formation and thereby prevent mineralisation.
