Hb does not undergo biomimetic mineralisation under standard conditions but can be chemically modified by acetylation or succinylation (shown) to increase the surface negative charge and facilitate ZIF-8 formation and encapsulation. BSA can be biomimetically mineralised but amination introduces surface amine groups that are protonated under the conditions used for ZIF-8 formation and thereby prevent mineralisation.
