(A) Illustrates how an immune mediated response in T1DM destroys beta cells within pancreatic islets, leading to hyperglycemia, resulting in cardiac damage which promotes the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. (B) Shows how environmental influences (diet, inactivity) lead to insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, beta cell burnout, and subsequent dysregulation of glucose, leading to hyperglycemia, cardiac damage, and ultimately diabetic cardiomyopathy. Noteworthy is the arrow indicating the progression of diabetic cardiomyopathy and that it occurs and progresses uniquely in certain populations of individuals, namely male and females.
