Schematic of proposed model of mechanism underlying the swelling-induced Cl− current ICl,swell in HI brain injury. Following hypoxic and ischemic insult, there is aberrant activity of the swelling-induced Cl− current ICl,swell. This can lead to neuronal death and result in brain damage. Ultimately, neurobehavioural performance may be negatively affected. However, this outcome can be reversed with treatment using the specific swelling-induced Cl− current ICl,swell antagonist DCPIB. Aberrant swelling-induced Cl− current ICl,swell activity is reduced. Consequently, there is less neuronal death and brain damage, which would contribute to improved neurobehavioural performance.
