Quantification of arylsulfatase activity in individual transformants. Cells cultured under high-CO₂ conditions were maintained under high-CO₂ in the light (H), transferred to low-CO₂ in the light (L), or to low-CO₂ in the dark (D). After an 8-h incubation under these conditions, arylsulfatase activity was measured by a 12-h enzyme reaction, as described in “Materials and Methods.” 5D is the host strain used for DNA transformation. CAO2, CAO3, and CAO4 represent transformants harboring pCAO2, pCAO3, and pCAO4, respectively. The results are the average of three determinations, with sd represented by the bars above the graph.
