Generation of triclosan-resistant mutants in the presence of exogenous fatty acids is fakA dependent. (A) WT S. aureus and the isogenic ΔfakA mutant were plated from overnight cultures as a lawn on TSA or TSA containing the fatty acid supplement, and a triclosan-impregnated disk was placed on top of the agar. Isolated colonies that grew within the zone of inhibition were counted after 1 and 2 days of growth. The mean results from four independent experiments are shown.
