| region | type | smallpox % of all burials, mean | 95% CI | P (south < north)a | N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| southb | rural | 4.08 | 2.37–5.78 | 14 | |
| north | rural | 7.90 | 6.51–9.29 | 0.0004 | 43 |
| south | urban | 8.37 | 4.16–12.58 | 7 | |
| north | urban | 13.37 | 10.27–16.47 | 0.0205 | 10 |
P values report the results of (one-sided unpaired with unequal variance) t-tests of differences in means between north and south in each settlement type.
The ‘southern’ sample comprised all places in dataset that were south of 53° latitude, but excluding Cornwall. The Northern sample included the rest of England.
