S2: event-related potential after presentation of the second auditory stimulus. Gating is measured by the ratio of S2/S1 amplitude. Hash marks indicate the P50 waveform. Before smoking, patients show worse P50 gating relative to controls. After smoking, P50 gating is restored to control levels in patients. Smoking impaired P50 gating in healthy subjects (Adler et al., 1993).
