This operation essentially diverts bile and pancreatic secretions to the distal bowel for mixing with nutrients/chyme, typically much further distal than a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Traditional biliopancreatic diversion consists of a modest reduction in stomach volume, typically about 300–400 mL, as well as the diversion of bile and pancreatic secretions.
