Figure 7

Phospho-SMAD2 (Ser465/467) (P-SMAD2) is detected in the nuclei of ECs of normal choroidal blood vessels but not in ECs of the CNVMs of AMD patients. Fixed paraffin-embedded CNVM sections from 2 AMD patients and human eye sections containing normal choroidal blood vessels were analyzed by immunofluorescence using phospho-SMAD2 (green) and CD34 (red) antibodies. Arrowheads indicate P-SMAD2 positive nuclei. Arrows and asterisks indicate the retinal pigment epithelium and red blood cells, respectively, which exhibits autofluorescence. Scale bars, 14 μm.
